Being a Leader & The Effective Exercise of Leadership

This is a powerful laboratory for introducing how to be effective in leading others with a new model of leadership.  This exercise will teach you how to lead as your natural self-expression.

The Course

The Being A Leader Course involves a serious inquiry into yourself as a leader.  Working together, participants discover the underlying premises and assumptions in which we operate. These assumptions determine and limit what is and what isn’t possible for us as leaders.  In the course, these assumptions, ways of thinking, and ways of working are examined and reconsidered, making way for something entirely new.

The Being A Leader Course is about being a leader and exercising leadership effectively. While management is often as critical as leadership is in fulfilling a mission, this program is not about management; it is about being a leader, and the effective exercise of leadership. This program will leave you able to determine when management is required, and when leadership is required.

Methodology: Operate In a New Domain

This program engages in transformative learning. We distinguish between transformative learning and informative learning.  Transformative learning occurs in a different domain than informative learning.

Informative Learning

If you went to school, you have experienced informative learning.  It works to increase the sum of what we know, to add to our available skills, to extend our already established cognitive capacities.  Informative learning brings valuable new content to add to or fill in our pre-existing frames of reference (the way we organize events and knowledge).  For the most part, we are totally unaware of these pre-existing frames of reference. They operate invisibly and powerfully in the background, because they are “just the way things are.” 

Transformative Learning

On the other hand, Transformative Learning examines the context of how we know what we know, and how we experience the world.  Transformative Learning guides us in becoming aware of the context of our interpretations and beliefs, and to be critically reflective of our underlying assumptions.  Rather than adding to an existing frame of reference, transformative learners explore the frame of reference itself; its genealogy, internal logic, uses, as well as assess the costs and benefits, advantages and disadvantages of your particular frame of reference. 

Having been fully distinguished, the participant is now free to reconstruct the frame of reference as desired. New openings for action become possible. Power and freedom increase exponentially.

Both kinds of learning are valuable and appropriate; however, in this program, we are not asking you to learn new skills, add to what you know, or even modify your style.  Rather, we will ask you to inquire into the whole way you identify yourself, the world, and the relationship between the two. 

The Format

There will be approximately 10 participants in the course. We will meet for 6 days.  The program is also available Online. The coursework is intellectually challenging, and you will have the opportunity to create and engage in a leadership project that is meaningful to you.

This course is based on original work from the Being a Leader and the Effective Exercise of Leadership Course, co-created by Michael Jensen, Professor of Business Administration, Harvard University, and Werner Erhard, the creator of innovative models of individual, organizational, and social transformation. This unique training in leadership has impacted the lives of many in multiple universities including the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth University, Texas A & M, Mays School of Business, and the US Air Force Academy.

Often teams are constructed around the circumstance and, hence, temporary in nature.  The key to effective teamwork is correlated to an individual’s effectiveness in communication, planning, and coordinated action. In times of crisis, we tend to come together and collaborate in a supportive way. However, when the circumstances change and the situation is resolved or eliminated, we tend to go back to business as usual.  

How do we maintain resilient and reliable partnerships that perform powerfully over time?

This program begins with having participants examine their work culture, their tenure and work experience, and their relationship with one another.  We create a safe environment for open and honest communication for a new level of authenticity to arise.  Often unexpressed feelings or points of view can block an ease to being related and working together as a team.  Once all is said and forgiven, participants move on and develop a new affinity for one another whether it is their manager, co-worker, or direct report.

Participants are also given the opportunity to identify each individual’s unique contributions.  To hear what they bring to the team is remarkable, and brings forth stamina and a new confidence. Informed by this new background of connection, participants now feel free to design a new future that is ambitious and aligned with their self-expression.
